Students Council Candidate
Dominique Fjeld, she/her
Tansi (hello), my name is Dominique Fjeld! I am a proud Metis woman, originally from Peavine Metis Settlement. However I have resided in Grande Prairie for the past 12 years. I am currently in my second year of post secondary at Northwestern Polytechnic; working towards my Bachelor of Social Work Degree. I am the returning President of the Northwestern Polytechnic’s Circle of Indigenous Students, with this role I am able to help plan and volunteer with Indigenous events on campus and in the community. Currently I am sitting as one of the student seats on the Board of Governors for NWP and I also sit on the youth council for the Spirit Seekers Youth Conference. All of these positions have allowed me to gain so much knowledge and experience that can help me perform well on the student council.
I want to be on the student council for Northwestern Polytechnic because I want to support, give guidance and empower the student body. I will always be a safe space for students to openly address any issues or concerns that they may have. I want the people to feel like they have been heard and they have an ally in their corner! I want to help create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and accepted. A place where everyone feels like they are a part of a pack, the NWP wolf pack! Being on the student council would be such an honor because I can give back to my fellow students, as they have given so much to me.

Students Council Candidate
Desiree Dezzy Downey, she/her
My name is Desiree Downey; however, my preferred name is Dezzy!

I have a variety of interests and hobbies such as music, dancing, reading, watching movies, learning new things, interacting with others, shopping, volunteering, gardening, road trips, and hanging out with my dog. I am a mature student and I have experience in being a student council member. Student council members partake in creating a more enjoyable academic experience. The impact they make has an influence on this year as well as years to come. I would truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the process as I will be a full-time student at Northwestern Polytechnic long term in order to achieve my career goal. I am in my first year of open studies and have enjoyed advocating for my peers during previous educational experiences. My most significant passion is helping others proactively. A compliment I often receive is that I can organize tasks by priority, and I always finish a task that I have started. I have a background in support work and social work. During this experience I had the privilege to assist vulnerable groups and communities. I took some time out of school to adventure an alternative career path while staying true to what is most important to me which is helping others. I value the ability to listen to everyone’s thoughts and ideas with a non-judgemental approach. If I am permitted, I would like to ensure that students are able to speak with me regarding private manners as well, I gained my mental health first aid to assist those struggling with mental health issues. I believe each person is unique and has the right to be heard because we all have a story to share. By sharing our stories each person could help someone grow and become more knowledgeable. As a student council member, I would be fortunate to be able to engage with individuals and learn something new every day. As a first-year student everything is new and exciting. However, it can also be intimidating because this school is perceived as new and it’s quite large. Each person is striving to build an adequate support network and become familiar with their surroundings. Returning students are familiar with Northwestern Polytechnic and what is required to be a successful student. On the bright side, first year students also have a fresh perspective on where there may be room for improvement. These are influential years of our lives that we will remember for years to come. I also believe that I would be an asset to the student council because I am organized, have good time management skills, and a very positive attitude. I enjoy making the most out of my academic experience and encourage others to engage in every opportunity available. Students may have seen my face around school partaking in volunteer opportunities because I am also a student ambassador. First year students may recognize me from orientation. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Students Council Candidate - Fairview
Ash Bishop, they/them/she/her
Hi my name is Ash,

What you should know about me is that my passion for life is what fuels my fire. I believe in infectious joy, encouraging others and compassion.
I’m bold, brave, innovative and resourceful. As a person, I‘m very determined and enjoy setting goals for myself; while I actively maintain a personal ‘Bucket List’ which I continuously add to.

Some principles I believe in are creating solutions instead of problems, when concerns arise and that people are our biggest resource, making connections rather then burning bridges. I see strength in teamwork and that each other’s weaknesses are only opportunities.

I have a deep skill box through my experiences with communication, emotional intelligence, and leadership.
At home, I have a blind-epileptic dog named Atlas, who has taught me with love and patience almost anything can be accomplished; I also have a cat, Wander, and a horse, River.

I am currently in my first year of studies for Animal Health Technology; I’m hoping to bring my enthusiasm and creative ideas to contribute to the Students Association during my time here.

Students Council Candidate
Quentin Spiers, he/him
Hello, my name is Quentin. I’m a student ambassador and the (CIS) student ambassador. I’m currently enrolled in open studies and planning on attending U of L for a major in psychology. I’m all around campus doing volunteer work for the school and student ambassadors, so I look forward to talking to the student body and having the opportunity to help all students get what they need for their school year in the student council. I’ve worked in client care for shelters, and I’ve worked for event centres, so I have chosen jobs that have trained me for the tremendous job of helping all of you and representing the students of NWP.

Students Council Candidate
Mason Huckabone, he/him
Hello! I’m Mason and I’ve been a Student Council member since my freshman year of High School. We dedicate a huge part of our lives to education, so I enjoy constructing the environment we feel comfortable in and enjoy partaking in the activities that allow us to ease our stress. During my previous period in Student Council, my objective was to provide permanent resources for less fortunate countries. I successfully lead this movement when I was elected president of my school, and fundraised cattle and water wells for villages. If I am elected I would like to move this objective towards more local communities, while focusing on creating positivity on our campus whether it be giving back to you or creating events, I promote nothing but happiness and would like to express that in the best way possible!

Students Council Candidate
Wendy Anthony, she/her
My name is Wendy Anthony. I am in my sophomore year of college, taking the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) course. My goal is to graduate from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor's degree in the course so that I may work at a hospital helping children, as a Child Life specialist. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 11 years old. Because of the challenges it has put me through I have become someone who is great at solving social problems and persevering.
I am interested in joining the Northwestern Polytechnic student’s Association council so that I can help make school life better for students, and make the transition from grade school or a working life, into college easier for new students. I am also interested in helping set up, advertise, and tear down any Student Association events when I can.
I do have experience with leadership roles and volunteer work. In 6th grade I ran for student council treasurer. I made posters and put in my all for the council. Unfortunately, that was the year I was diagnosed so I was not around for all events and fundraisers we had put on but when I was there I made sure to put in my all. I have volunteered for many things in the past as well, such as We Scare Hunger through my schools, helping the 3D Charity Hockey and Soccer tournament and helping to renovate and open the Veterans Gardens new mini museum.
In addition to my volunteer work I always try to make sure that I am there for everyone around me when they need my help or advice or comfort. In any event, I put other people's needs before my own and make them happy when I can. I am a hard worker and believe in working to the best of my ability in everything I do.

More About Student Council!
How many seats are available to represent each campus?
There are 9 councilors in total. We strive to have voices across a variety of our student body. While there is a dedicated Fairview representative, other Fairview students are encouraged to run for this seat or one of the other seats they may be eligible for.

Due to the population per campus, the majority of seats must be from Grande Prairie.

What does Student Council do in a year?
