Student Council Candidates

Student Council Candidate
Brennan Cincurack, he/him
Hello there, my name is Brennan, and I am currently a fourth-year student pursuing my Bachelor of Business Administration at Northwestern Polytechnic. I am writing to express my interest in becoming the School of Business Representative with the Northwestern Polytechnic Students’ Association. I believe that this position will allow me to contribute meaningfully to student governance while also continuing to develop as both a student and a professional.
I believe that, as students, we all face unique challenges related to academics, extracurricular involvement, and preparing for our future careers. By serving as a representative, I hope to strengthen the sense of community within the School of Business and ensure that every student feels supported and valued. In addition to advocacy, I am excited by the leadership and
personal growth opportunities that come with student governance. Participating in the Students’ Association would allow me to develop essential skills which will be paramount to my development as a professional in the real-world environment.
Above all, I would like to highlight how networking is another key reason why I am drawn to this role. The NWPSA provides an incredible platform to connect with students across programs, as well as faculty, administration, and community partners. I believe that engaging with a diverse range of people will broaden my perspective, inspire new ideas, and allow me to
contribute more effectively to the student body at Northwestern Polytechnic.
Thank you very much for considering my application. I am eager for the opportunity to contribute to the Students’ Association with you at Northwestern Polytechnic.

Student Council Candidate
Elizabeth Lapshin, she/her
My name is Elizabeth Lapshin, I am turning 20 years old this month, and I am a second-year student at Northwestern Polytechnic. My favourite color is green, I enjoy doing puzzles & video games during my free time, I hope to become a pharmacist, and I love listening to music.
The reason why I want to join the student council this year is that I want to socialize with more people before I transfer to a different university, and I want to help students have a great time during the events of this polytechnic. I was a member of my high school’s student council from grades 8-13; in grade 12, I became the treasurer of the school’s student council, where I helped find ways to have fun yet affordable activities and host events where we had to raise money, including bottle drives and bake sales.
I did not attempt to join last year because I was overwhelmed by college and worried I’d fall behind. However, as I go into another year of university with more wisdom and knowledge, I am confident that I can commit to my studies and student council, like I did back in high school. My first year of university was difficult and unexpected, but now that I have some experience, I know that I can join clubs, such as student council & eco club, during my second year of university.

Student Council Candidate
Tony Purnell, she/her
My name is Tony, and I am originally from the Okanagan. I have spent a total of nine years in Grande Prairie, most of that working in the oilfield. I am a Journeyperson in the trades and have returned to school to pursue a new career in business. Before that, I participated in Katimavik where I volunteered in Quebec and Saskatchewan for six months with other Canadian youths. This program gave me a sense of connection to various parts of Canada and emphasized the
importance of volunteerism.
At my core, I believe kindness is the most important thing.
I am interested in joining the student council for the 2025/2026 school year. Being a volunteer and member of the Student Council would be an excellent opportunity to learn the workings within the school’s framework, and build upon skills including leadership, communication, civic responsibility and policy advocacy, which will all be necessary in my pursuit of a career in
Governance and Policy Administration.
I am comfortable as a part of a team and would be happy to represent our student community as a liaison between them and the NWP Administration.
Thank you for the opportunity.

Student Council Candidate
Reeghan Funk, she/her
I have Cerebral Palsy, a paralyzed vocal cord and I am deaf. I have lived in Grande Prairie my entire life and most of the opportunities that many people take for granted like education and access to buildings or events, I have had for. When I entered the school system, I learned just how ignorant the world could be.
Accessibility, transportation and special education are areas that need to be addressed in Alberta. I moved up in every grade right along with my peers, but I struggled to understand teachers and friends due to being deaf. It was also hard when others took pity on me when I was trying to do expected activities because I was in a wheelchair. I always felt left behind and worked harder than most to keep my grades at honors level. Even though I coped and adapted to the best of my ability, I was tired of being left out and wanted to create change, not just for me but anyone else in a situation similar to mine.
Around my grade 6 year I finally got an opportunity to be the change I wanted to see. I joined a club called the Mighty Peace Day Group. When I joined this group I was so excited because it meant that I could bring notice to things that were important to me. I was a part of this club for 3 years, we fundraised money for multiple community organizations, we helped at events in our community and I finally had a voice at my school to bring awareness. Some changes that I prompted were getting accessible buttons on all doors at the school and getting handicapped bussing booked for field trips. During all of this I still had struggles but I felt that I was changing the school one step at a time.
At the end of my 8th grade year, COVID 19 hit the world and we were pushed into online education. It was definitely a learning curve for everyone including myself, as I had to now navigate how to hear through a computer where the volume and clarity are never perfect. During the pandemic, I had the chance to have Cochlear Implant (CI) surgery. The implant changed my life forever but it was a lot of hard work and determination.
As I entered high school, I found new confidence and I joined another club called Charles Spencer Interact Club, which is a part of Youth Rotary Grande Prairie. Our job was to help within the community and also fundraise money for national and international organizations. I was a part of that for 4 years and volunteered at many events showing my community what someone like me is capable of. I brought awareness to many and also created change at my school by getting captions on the display screens and for announcements and assemblies for students that are hard of hearing.
These past nine years have shown me that I can do great things and that I’m able to make the world a better place. I have been enrolled in kinesiology in hopes of becoming a recreation therapist. I want to help people live a better life and inspire them to take every opportunity presented as it may change their lives for the better. I play several highly competitive sports, power wheelchair soccer, VOLT wheelchair floor hockey, and para-equestrian horse riding. My sporting adventures continue as I play with Team Canada and we head for the Copa Americas Football Qualifiers.
I would love to join the Student Association at NWP for a second year and help continue my goal of creating positive changes by encouraging accessibility, advocacy and awareness and to inspire others around me to do the same.
