Vice President Internal Candidate
My name is Melanie Pack, and most people call me Melly. I'm a new student at Northwest Polytechnic having just started my studies in January of this year. I'm currently enrolled in the Business Diploma Program, and I have to admit that I'm loving it. I appreciate the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself, and why I would be a perfect fit for the Executive Council.
As a teenager I never did very good in school, I even dropped out a few weeks before graduation. However, I never let that hold me back from following my dreams. As a young woman I wanted to work on the service rigs, and in 2002 that dream became a reality. I spent seven years working my way up through the ranks and had I not found scuba diving, I would be a consultant now. I went to Mexico in 2006 and tried scuba diving for the first time, it was the best moment of my life. Following my passion for diving took me to Malaysia and a company called Scuba Junkie, I worked with them for 10 amazing years. Starting as an advanced open water student, continuing through to dive master, then working my way to PADI Instructor, and finishing my time with them managing their shop in the capitol city of Kota, Kinabalu. After all of this there was still something missing from my life, an academic education. I found my way back to Grande Prairie and NWP. Having gone from being a drop-out to now having straight A's, I feel I have a lot to offer to the Executive Council.
I am a social butterfly who is not afraid to speak to anybody. I love to talk about an array of topics, including difficult ones. I'm great at conversing in a way that makes people feel comfortable and puts them at ease. I'm open, honest and accepting; Everyone deserves to be treated equally. My years on the rigs gave me a strong work ethic, so I'm not afraid of a little hard work or getting my hands dirty. Working abroad opened my eyes to the wonders of other cultures and the beauty they behold. Being a manager taught me how to be a leader, how to be patient, and how to communicate clearly. Coming back to school has shown me that it's never too late to learn something new. I enjoy a good challenge no matter how steep the learning curve is. In this semester I am taking Intro to Accounting and Business Communications. Both of these courses will provide me with strong skills that will be an asset to this role.
Having met the other members of the Executive Council, it's obvious to me that we would make a great team. My lifetime of experience has been preparing me for this role in more ways than I could ever imagine. I'm looking forward to the campaigning period and the opportunity to get to know the student body.
